Headaches are one of the most common medical complaints; most people live at some point in their lives. It can affect everyone, regardless of age, race, and gender. Headache may be a sign of stress or emotional stress or may be caused by migraine or a medical condition such as high blood pressure, anxiety or depression. It can also cause other problems. For example, people with chronic migraine headaches may have difficulty going to work or school regularly
What are the causes of a headache?
Headache is a common complaint worldwide. Headache may occur anywhere on the head, on both sides of the head, or on one side only. There are different ways to describe headaches. Headache is classified as primary or secondary.
Primary headaches: Diseases of the head caused by overactive or pain-related structures directly in the head. This includes blood vessels, muscles and head, and neck nerves. They may also be caused by changes in chemical activity in the brain. Common headaches are migraine, cluster headaches, and tension headaches.
Secondary headaches: Another condition is the symptoms that occur when it stimulates the pain-sensitive nerves of the head. In other words, headache symptoms can be attributed to another cause. A wide variety of different factors can cause secondary headaches. These include alcohol-induced hangover, brain tumor, blood clots, bleeding in or around the brain, “brain frostbite or freezing headaches, carbon monoxide poisoning, concussion, drying, glaucoma, at night, teething, flu, rebound headaches excessive use of painkillers, panic attacks, stroke.
Since headaches can be a symptom of a serious condition, it is important to seek medical advice if they become more severe, orderly, or permanent. For example, if a headache is more painful and uncomfortable than previous headaches, if the drug worsens or does not heal, or if other symptoms such as confusion, fever, sensory changes and other stiffness in the neck are accompanied, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
Tension headaches: Tension headaches are the most common form of primary headache. Such headaches normally start slowly and gradually in the middle of the day. It can be felt: constant, dull pain on both sides, and pain spreading to the neck, as if there was a tight band on the head. Tension headaches can be episodic or chronic. Episodic attacks usually last for several hours but may take several days. Chronic headaches occur for 15 or more days per month for at least 3 months.
Usually, only one side of the head can cause a pulsating pain. Pain may be accompanied by blurred vision, dizziness, nausea and sensory disorders known as an aura. Migraine is the second most common form of primary headache and may have a significant impact on an individual’s life. A migraine can last from a few hours to 2 to 3 days.
Caused by excessive use of medication to treat headache symptoms. They are the most common cause of secondary headache. It usually starts early in the day and continues throughout the day. They can heal with painkillers, but they worsen when their effects are exhausted. Headache may include neck pain, restlessness, nasal congestion, and poor sleep quality. Rebound headaches can cause a number of symptoms and the pain can be different every day.
They usually last for 15 minutes to 3 hours and occur once a day for more than eight times a day for one month per week. Between clusters, there may be no headache symptoms and this headache-free period may last for months. Pain caused by cluster headaches: defined as unilateral, severe, usually sharp or caustic, and is usually found in or around an eye. The affected area may be red and swollen, the eyelid may sag, and the nasal nose on the affected side may become obstructed and fluid. Types of Headaches and Causes
Sudden and severe headaches, often described as the “worst headache of my life”. It reaches maximum density in less than a minute and lasts longer than 5 minutes. For life-threatening conditions such as Thunderclap headache, intracerebral hemorrhage, cerebral venous thrombosis, torn or intact aneurysms, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RVs), meningitis and pituitary apoplexy
Rest and pain medication are the most common ways to treat a headache. It is important to follow the doctor’s advice because excessive use of pain medication can cause headaches. Acupuncture is an alternative therapy that can help relieve headaches. There are several alternative treatment methods for headaches, but it is important to consult a doctor before making any significant changes or starting any alternative treatment form. Alternative approaches include acupuncture, cognitive behavior therapy, herbal and nutritional health products, hypnosis and meditation. Occasionally, a headache can be caused by a particular food or nutrient deficiency, particularly magnesium and some B vitamins. Lack of nutrients may be due to a poor quality diet, underlying absorption problems, or other medical conditions.
What can be done?
Several steps can be taken to reduce the risk of headaches and, if they occur, to alleviate the pain. Apply a heat pack or ice pack to your head or neck, but avoid extreme temperatures. Avoid stress as much as possible and develop healthy coping strategies for inevitable stress. Eat regular meals, taking care to keep your blood sugar stable. A hot shower can help, but in rare cases, exposure to hot water can trigger a headache. Exercising regularly and getting enough rest and sleeping regularly contribute to reducing overall health and stress.
